About Kalyan

KalyanKalyan is part of Thane district, part of Konkan region of Maharashtra. A major railway junction near Mumbai, capital of Maharashtra, Kalyan-Dombivli is a twin city with its municipal headquarters located in Kalyan. Kalyan is part of the Greater Mumbai metropolitan, along with New Mumbai and the cities of Bhiwandi, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Karjat and the Vasai-Virar region.

History of Kalyan

The history of Kalyan goes back over 700 years. Before the rise of Mumbai and siltation eclipsed it, Kalyan was a port for more than two millennia. The city’s extensive ruins indicate the city’s former magnificence. During the Middle Ages, Kalyan was forcibly occupied by the Ahmednagar Sultanate. They gave the name of Gulsanabad For a brief period of time it was occupied by the Portuguese and then re-conqured by the Muslim allies of the Mughals. It was then conqured by the Maraths who made Kalyan an important strategic centre since it guarded the entrance to Mumbai and the western coast of India. Almost after 80 years, Kalyan became a part of Bombay Presidency the then British Empire of India

People of Kalyan

The people of Kalyan which is part of Thane district of Maharashtra, are mostly Hindus with a significant number of people being Muslims and Buddhists. Marathi and Hindi are commonly spoken here.

Kalyan Administration

In 1984, Dombivli Municipal Council got merged with Kalyan to form a new governing body, the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation. It is headed by the mayor and administers various public services. For details of the Council, click here

Durgadi FortDurgadi Killa (Fort)

Durgadi Fort which was built by the Marathas measures 220 feet in length and breadth. It was built during the time of Shivaji to honor Hindu Goddess, Durga. Durgadi is derived from two words Durga meaning Goddess and Gaad meaning fort in Marathi. It is one of the most important historical monuments of Kalyan. Though only remains of the fort.

The most important attraction of Durgadi is Ganesh Ghat which is locally known as Lover’s Point. A great place to catch the evening sunset. One can also indulge in horse riding and boating here.

Birla Mandir

Birla Mandir is a Hindu temple located in Shahad in Ullhasnagar about 4kms from Kalyan. The temple is dedicated to Vithoba or incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Birla Mandir is a beautifully designed temple adorned with numerous sculptures. Though it is a century old temple, it is beautifully maintained where visitors can admire the structures and carvings on the wall.

Tourist attractions in Kalyan

If you love adventure, Malanggad is an important and interesting trekking destination, 13 kms fom Kalyan station. Haji Malanggad is built on three levels and on the lowest level stands the Dargah of Sufi saint – Haji Malang. On the other end lies Panchi Pir and is named after 5 pirs who accompanied Haji Malang.
